Subject: RE: Recommend Durjay Sen Gupta?
Jeff,
Just a quick response to let you know
that I would highly recommend Rajasthan Travel Guide (Compass) and Durjay
for your trip. I found him on the Internet and was impressed with his
prompt and thorough responses to my questions while planning my trip at
short notice (June 2001). I also checked with Cox & King (right name?)
but found Compass to be much more price competitive and, even more
importantly, able to offer highly personalized service. From the time he
picked me up at the airport to the time I met him at the hotel in Delhi to
debrief, I was highly impressed with the professionalism, dependability,
knowledge, contacts (very important in India) and personal touch (you will
always have the number of his personal cell phone during your trip, and he
will respond as if a friend needed help) of Durjay Sen Gupta. He is a
young entrepreneur building his business and deserves, in my judgment, the
support and trust of travelers coming to this fascinating country. Two
recommendations: I'd try the Oberoi hotel while you're in Delhi and would
highly recommend the Amarvilas in Agra as a fantastic hotel with views of
the Taj Mahal.
Have a great trip,
Stefan

Hi Durjay!
Can you
believe I'm at it already!
Felt badly we did not say a proper
good-bye to Bhawani & Kishin. They would not let them in the airport
and they wouldn't let us out after we got our boarding pass. You were
right as usual! They were overbooked - offered us a 5 star hotel and $300
each in compensation to stay till Sunday, but accepted our rejection.
We wanted to extend our thanks again to you and your lovely
wife and daughter. To you for the very many ways you helped us make the
trip a reality, and them for sharing their home, the wonderful dinner and
beautiful gift. I'm not sure I can express our appreciation for all of
this, but please know that anything we can do to ensure your future
success, you can count on us for.
Although I have future
postings planned for hotels and the like, I wanted to get something on
about you right away because so little time is left in the travel season
there. I see you took my advice on looking into indiatimes.com. I put a
posting on there about you and am trying to paste it on fodors.com Feel
free to use it however you like. I know it's long, but I think it answers
lots of questions people have and gives them more of the total sense of
what you offer. I'll paste it at the end.
Take care,
Cathy

Just back from a 16
day stay in India and have to let everyone know what a fantastic time we
had thanks to our travel agent/tour operator in Delhi. His name is Durjay
Sengupta of Compass Tours and Travels, e-mail compassindia@vsnl.net
we are independent travelers and very rarely use a travel agent. After
attempting to piece the trip together with individual bookings via the
Internet, I decided to get a quote from a few travel agents. I had MANY
reservations about using an agent in India after all I read about the
various scams. In the end I figured that life is full of risks, and people
who don't take any, never realize all the wonderful possibilities. I am so
happy we took this chance because I am convinced, after meeting many
fellow travelers along the way, that we would never have learned so much
or gained such an appreciation for this culture without the help of Durjay
and his staff. Although he can arrange trips for any budget, ours was a
moderate one. He arranged a driver for the entire stay, our hotels, guides
at specific sites/cities and several activities I requested. A
guide/escort accompanied us since we were traveling many back roads to
small villages in the interior. The services of this escort/guide added
immeasurably to our trip, making even the smallest arrangements with
literally no effort on our part. I found out early on when planning just
how accommodating Durjay is, responding to literally any request I made.
His capabilities went far beyond what anyone would expect of a travel
agent in the U.S. I did not use any of the standard routes, like the ones
suggested for many India packages. There were several villages and
wildlife areas I wanted to mix with the big cities. He was a huge help in
planning the route since he knew the distances and road conditions in
these less-traveled areas. I chose all hotels, although Durjay did offer
sound advice if he felt specific ones would not meet our expectations. All
but one exceeded our expectations and offered an extremely good value,
thanks to his advice. Before deciding to use him I had actually booked a
few of the hotels myself and gotten quotes for a car/driver. He was able
to arrange everything for less than I would have been able to
independently. This guy is really genuine. I have to say that I truly
believe his first priority is your satisfaction and enjoyment, not the
money. This may be because he is attempting to establish a customer base
and he knows that this is the way to his ultimate success, although now
knowing him, I'm also sure it is due in part to his personal nature and
professional pride. Along the way I met several travelers, although I have
to say that tourism is VERY slow there. One couple had been there 2 weeks,
about the same as us at that point. They were traveling by train and had
booked hotels themselves. After several conversations, we were amazed to
find how little they had actually done and seen compared with us. Come to
find out, their total trip cost was about the same. I really felt sorry
for them. They had to pay for rickshaws and/or taxis to get around in
various cities, while we had a driver at our beck and call. And in
Ranthambhore, where we met, they had literally stayed in the camp for 4
days, venturing out only for the prearranged safaris to the park. They had
not had the opportunity to walk around any towns, meet local people or
really find out anything about the wonderful culture.
My
husband says that I should let people know "If they don't have royal
blood and want to get an idea of how royalty lives, they should visit
Rajasthan." I am still not sure if this royal treatment was
attributed to the wonderful hospitality of the Rajasthani people or due to
the efforts of Durjay and his staff, but it was a magnificent experience!
Later I'll be posting more about our trip in the form of a travelogue and
hotel reviews.
Before agreeing to use Durjay, I was fortunate to be able to speak with several
budget and luxury U.S. travelers who had used him. If you contact him, I'm
sure he'll give you those references and I'll be glad to give anyone more
information if they request it.

This message is just to express sincere thanks and appreciation from my
wife and myself for the successful arrangements made by Compass India for
our recent tour of India. Everything went very well: the Compass representatives
were all punctual, professional and efficient; guides & drivers were
all good, some were excellent. I will certainly recommend Compass India
to friends and colleagues and I am very grateful for all the hard work by
yourself and your colleagues to ensure that our tour was thoroughly enjoyable.
With best regards,

Hi Shweta!!!
My trip to India was absolutely WONDERFUL to say the least!!! My requested
iternary was followed through to the exact. My hotels and meals were beyond
expectations. I especially loved the Golden Temple in Amritsar and the Hindu
temples in Madurai. My drivers were absolutely the best and the guides were
the greatest as they all wrote down everything for me because I had a problem
understanding the English accents due to my hearing handicap. Not one of
them had a problem writing the info down. As a matter of fact, several of
them wrote the info down the night before and then I could read it before
the tour. They were SUPER!!!
I will highly recommend Compass Tours to anyone and you certainly may use
my name as a reference.
Thank you so much, Shweta, for your time and patience on planning my wonderful,
unforgettable trip to India.

Subject: Feedback on India tour- Elisenda
Hello Shweta & Durjay,
We are now back to the UK after a very nice time in India. We would like
to thank you and your team for the organisation, and we also thought it
would be a good idea to give you some feedback on guides, hotels, sightseeing.
Delhi
Fantastic monuments, too short...! I would have liked to see more of old
Delhi. The guide was informative and quite friendly, he took us to a carpet
shop where we stayed for quite a while (finally we purchased one!). I think
that we could have spent the time walking in the old town instead! The Imperial
hotel is great we had a great time, and also enjoyed dinner.
Udaipur
The flight was good. The arrival was as good as in Delhi. The guide was
the best we had. He explained in great detail all the monuments and places
we visited, and also gave us lots of information about the Indian culture
and history that we much appreciated. The sightseeing was great. We had
dinner at the Lake palace hotel. The dinner was overpriced and not special
at all, apart from the views! Our hotel: udaivilas was also a fantastic
experience. Staffs were very friendly and even gave us advice on the prices
to pay for some textiles. Dinner at Udaivilas was great.
Jaipur
We were extremely lucky to have Mansing as a driver!! He is the best,
always smiling and helpful. The journey was long and quite tedious, but
we arrived safely, and had a relaxed evening instead of doing the visit
to the temple. The day after we went to see the Amber fort, this was nice.
The hotel was fine, food also enjoyable Agra The journey was again quite
tedious, but we also managed pretty good with the help of Mansingh!. Our
guide was very acknowledgeable. He explained all the history in great detail.
We visited a very interesting marble shop, where we purchased a tray. The
hotel was good, with beautiful views to the Taj. We had the best music entertainment!
Overall I think that if I had to do the trip again with you.
Hope it helps, and thank you very much, we had an incredible time!
Best regards,
Elisenda & Carles - U
